Individual experiences become a public field which generates a new cartography of the place. Based on an interactive and continuously growing online archive that is generated by the inhabitants of a place, urbanilgrims.org researches individual stories of urban space and interweaves them with real space. Every city originates a complete new series of works - guided tours in public using performance/ gesture/sound, photographs both online and possibly as real space projections, as well as online and offline discussions with guests/audiences and possibly an exhibition/or installation.

On an online questionnaire and map of the city visitors are asked about their personal experiences in relation to specific locations of their choice. Naturally, and through the accumulation of answers, issues of power relationships, space structures, image production and forms of urban appropriation will be addressed. The results of the questionnaire-responses will be structured according to different key-words to easily facilitate access to the information. The purpose of the questionnaire is to be adapted throughout the project and tailored to specific issues that may want to be addressed by the community or the city.

urbanpilgrims.org deals with aspects, images and moments that are characteristic of place and comes closer to the subconscious and collective knowledge of the city. The aim is to converge site-specifically to the genius loci of the location. The genius loci (latin: genius = (protective) spirit, loci = genitiv singular of locus = place) was historically the protective spirit of a place. It was often depicted as a snake. In contemporary usage, genius loci usually refers to a location's distinctive atmosphere, or a 'spirit of place`. (source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Angela Dorrer's Pilgrimage digs into the strata of urban myth and anecdote. Responding to a survey model it does not propose a 'more true' reading of the urban landscape. Instead it gives the viewer a glimpse of a particular subjectivity, a part of which is the viewer's own. Dorrer dislocates her project from totalistic narratives and instead aims for a pilgrimage tracing a constellation across the urban environment, responding to traces collected through her survey and the tales of those surveyed.

urban pilgrims address several topics: The interweaving of public spaces (real and virtual). The memory of places. Walking as a creative act. The re-enchantment (‘Wiederverzauberung’) of landscape. The substitution of traditional spirituality with art-activitities. The dealing with different media, networks and the identity of communities. The role of the artist as a mediator. The contradictory views of rational and holististic world-views. The submission to situations and orchestrating them with the goal of creating very specific atmospheres and images.

Individuelle Erfahrungen werden zum public field welches eine neue Kartografie des Ortes generiert. Basierend auf einem interaktiven und kontinuierlich wachsenden Online-Archiv, das von den BewohnerInnen generiert wird, untersucht urbanpilgrims.org individuelle Geschichten des urbanen Raumes in verschiedenen Städten und verknüpft diese mit dem Realraum. In jeder Stadt entsteht eine neue Serie von Arbeiten - Führungen im öffentlichen Raum mit Aktionen/Bewegungen/Gesten/Sound, Ausstellung/Installation(en), fotografische Archive online oder als Realraum –Projektion und Online- und Offline-Diskussionen mit Gästen/Publikum.

In einer Online-Umfrage und auf einem Stadtplan werden die BesucherInnen nach individuellen Momenten und Erlebnissen gefragt, die an konkrete Orte ihrer Stadt geknüpft sind. Durch die Ansammlung der Antworten werden auf selbstverständliche Weise unterschiedliche Themenkreise angesprochen, wie zum Beispiel generelle Raumstrukturen, Formen urbaner Aneignung, Image-Darstellungen oder Kräfteverhältnisse innerhalb der Stadt. Die Umfrage-Ergebnisse werden im Archiv thematisch nach Keywords und unterschiedlichen Gesichtpunkten strukturiert, um die Information leicht zugänglich zu machen. Die Fragen sollen im Laufe des Projektes im Hinblick auf spezifischen Themen und Interessen einer Stadt beziehungsweise Community angepasst und erweitert werden.

Urbanpilgrims.org naehert sich sitespezifisch dem unterbewussten und kollektiven Wissen, dem Genius Loci, des Ortes. Der Begriff genius loci (lateinisch: genius = (Schutz-)geist, loci = Genitiv Singular von locus = Ort) bezeichnete ursprünglich in der römischen Mythologie den Schutzgeist oder die Schutzgottheit eines Ortes, die häufig in Form einer Schlange dargestellt wurde. Heute wird der Ausdruck meist im übertragenen Sinne gebraucht; so bezeichnet man die besondere, vorherrschende Atmosphäre, den einzigartigen, innewohnenden Charakter eines Ortes (oder auch den "Teamgeist" einer dort ansässigen Gruppe) als genius loci. Angela Dorrers Pilgerweg begibt sich in die Tiefenschichten urbaner Anekdoten und Mythologien. Ihr Projekt basiert auf einer Umfrage und schlaegt nicht eine 'wahre' Lesart der urbanen Landschaft vor, sondern gewaehrt der/dem BetrachterIn einen fluechtigen Einblick in eine ganz bestimmte Subjektivitaet, die ein Teil seiner selbst ist. Dorrer verlagert ihr Projekt vom rein Erzaehlerischen hin zu einem `Pilgerweg`, welcher unterschiedlichste Spuren und Faktoren quer durch die urbane Umgebung aufspuert.
